In Mexico, Mother’s Day, the Día de las Madres, is always 10 May, whatever day of the week it falls on. Children’s Day is 30 April, Teachers’ Day is 15 May, and Grandparents’ Day, the Día del Abuelo, is 28 August. Father’s Day is the third Sunday of June.

The year is full of days kept together. Las Posadas fill the nine nights from 16 to 24 December, Nochebuena brings the family to the table, and children wake up to gifts on Día de Reyes, 6 January. Whoever finds the little figure in the rosca hosts the tamales on Candelaria, 2 February.

Each of these days is one more reason to call, visit or share a meal with the people you love.

Notes on Mexican dates

  • Día de las Madres is 10 May every year, not a Sunday, so it moves through the week.
  • Día del Abuelo is 28 August in Mexico, not 26 July as in Spain and much of Latin America.
  • Día del Amor y la Amistad, 14 February, is for friends as well as partners.
  • Día de Muertos is listed on 2 November. Families honor children who have died on 1 November and adults on 2 November.
